Sir Bob Kerslake, the Head of the Civil Service, has endorsed the Military Spouses Business and Employment Charter which was recently launched by Heropreneurs and Recruit for Spouses.
‘I would be very happy to endorse this campaign and I am determined that the Civil Service remains a positive and equal employer of military spouses.
‘We have recently written to all Departments asking them to do all they can to help existing Civil Servants who wish to return to their previous department at the end of their partner or spouse’s posting.
‘In addition, departments have been asked to look at access to unpaid career breaks, which is an option in many departments, and which can allow an individual to maintain continuity of service with an agreed return date.’
Sir Bob Kerslake was appointed Permanent Secretary at the Department for Communities and Local Government in 2010, and took up the post on 1 November 2010.
In November 2011, it was announced that following Sir Gus O’Donnell’s retirement, Bob would take up the post as Head of the Civil Service from 1 January 2012. This is alongside his role as Permanent Secretary for DCLG.
At 31 March 2011, Civil Service employment was 498,433.
