Guest Blog :“Creating Positive Change: Supporting Women’s Wellness and Resilience”

Updated: Apr 1

Our community of mentees is full of amazing people creating incredible things.

This month we invited Heropreneurs Mentee Elizabeth Simpson to share her business journey with us.

Elizabeth, over to you.....

I was deeply honoured to receive a certificate of appreciation from the Battalion and a Commanding Officer Coin during the King Charles III military medals parade.

"As a wellness and resilience coach, I’m passionate about helping women transform their lives by making meaningful changes to their physical and emotional health. My journey into coaching began with a shift from a career in teaching to a desire to work closely with individuals who need additional support. This evolved into a coaching business where I support women in reclaiming their wellness and thriving amidst life's challenges.

Educator to Coach

My path to becoming a wellness and resilience coach began in the classroom, where I spent years as a secondary science teacher. I’ve always been driven by a passion for learning and understanding human behaviour. As life evolved, I wanted to work more closely with individuals, helping them through their difficulties. I immersed myself in studies, earning qualifications in psychology and counselling, and then I found coaching—a new career that perfectly combined my love for psychology, CBT, and personal development. Becoming a fully accredited Wellness and Resilience Coach has allowed me to pursue a career I love, one that is (almost) completely posting-proof.

The most rewarding part of my work as a coach is witnessing those ‘a-ha!’ moments when clients experience a breakthrough in understanding or development. Each session I facilitate is centred around the unique needs and goals of my clients. Whether we’re focusing on stress management, self-care, mindset shifts, or setting achievable goals, we create personalised action plans that enable my clients to unlock their potential and build lasting behavioural changes that improve both their emotional and physical health.

My background in the public sector, coupled with my personal experiences as a military spouse, gives me a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities women face in striving to improve their wellness amidst a busy life. This understanding inspired my desire to support my local spouse/partner community.

Community Engagement

As I prepared emotionally and practically for my husband’s new posting overseas, I realised that the training and resources I had helped me make quick and impactful decisions and mindset shifts. This approach supported me through the compromises and changes I faced—like deciding whether to join my husband overseas or commit to up to two years of separation, including solo parenting. I noticed that the spouse/partner community wasn’t offered much support for these experiences, so I organised a community project to support spouses/partners in preparing for this overseas posting, with the ambition of helping others improve their sense of independence, enhance social connectedness, and reduce the risk of isolation and impacts on mental health.

I’m a firm believer in making the change you want to see. Over the last couple of years, I’ve organised and hosted networking events and in-person group activities to offer an alternative for spouses who want to meet new people and improve their overseas experience. But there’s still more to do. One improvement I’ve pursued is a central, approachable hub for military spouses/partners that transcends rank, location, and branch of service. This hub promotes the amazing and creative communities, organisations, and individuals in the spouse/partner community who are working hard to improve the experience for everyone. The community group I founded has now evolved into Strength – Network for UK Military Spouses & Partners.

The actions I’ve taken to support others in my community were recently officially recognised! I was deeply honoured to receive a certificate of appreciation from the Battalion and a Commanding Officer Coin during the King Charles III military medals parade. Although this recognition remains a pleasant surprise, I’m grateful that others in the community have felt the impact of my efforts to reduce isolation, build connections, and support improvements in well-being.

Growth and Development

Building my business has been one of the most enjoyable, rewarding, and creative activities I’ve ever engaged in. I am excited about returning to the UK, continuing to work with individual coaching clients, delivering my next online group coaching programme in the autumn, and commencing my next study challenge: an MSc in the Psychology of Mental Health & Wellbeing.

Using my skills, knowledge, and determination to support my community feels like a natural extension of the work I love to do. Although I don’t work exclusively with military spouses, I encourage them to read my blog article, ‘Unveiling Toxic Resilience: A Closer Look at Military Spouses,’ and reflect on what resilience means to them. Consider how they can make changes to improve their circumstances and their own physical and emotional health despite the challenges of living alongside military life—while also using the unique resources available to them."
